Modern American Animation

This article describes the history of animation in the United States of America since the late 80's until the early twenty-first century. This period is often called the renaissance of American animation, during which many large American entertainment companies reform and reinvigorate its animation department after the decline suffered in the 60, 70 and 80.

From 1988 to the present

Disney's return

In the mid 80's, the American animation industry fell into disgrace. Toy commercials masquerading as entertainment programs cartoons dominated the evening and the morning of Saturday, and the only experiment was carried out by independent developers. Even animated films were projected in theaters at times, but the glory of the old days was gone. Even the animation giant Disney, which had fought a corporate acquisition in the 80's, was considering abandoning the production of animated feature films.

Both the enthusiastic audience, critics, and the animators were taken by surprise when the long-awaited renaissance of animation began in the oldest and most conservative corporation, Disney.

Disney had a drastic change in the 80, its new chief Michael Eisner the company relocated to his feet, returning to its roots and revitalizing their studies. While Disney gave new life to animation, Steven Spielberg was making his own way. Spielberg and Warner Bros.

Spielberg, meanwhile, switched to TV and worked with animation studio Warner Bros. to produce "The Tiny Toon Adventures," a high quality animated series that paid homage to the great cartoons of Termite Terrace. In 1989, "The Simpsons," an animated short based on the "The Tracey Ullman Show," became the first animated series in prime time since "The Flintstones" and captivated a large part of the audience. It was the first hit series for the fledgling Fox, caused little sensitivity, entering popular culture and gaining wide acceptance. In 2008, "The Simpsons" seem to show no signs of stopping, and could surpass "Gunsmoke" as the fiction program on the air longer the history of American television. In 2007 have released their first film, titled "The Simpsons: The Movie", dubbed in Spanish and Chinese.

Ren and Stimpy

In 1991, Nickelodeon premiered "The Ren and Stimpy Show," "Ren and Stimpy" was a quirky series run riot violated all the traditional restrictions of correct drawings of Saturday morning and instead favored the quirky style of the short the golden era. In 1994, Cartoon Network gave consent to a new series called "Space Ghost" coast to coast with a particular postmodern turn, showed live interviews with celebrities, mixed with cartoon animations original "Space Ghost." The series made the leap with the production of Hanna-Barbera, now owned by Cartoon Network. It was the beginning of a common practice used old Hanna-Barbera characters for new productions, as the surreal "Underwater Laboratory 2021", based on the cartoon short early 70's "Sealab 2020." "Adult Swim" is a block of animation for adults that is issued at the start of primetime on Cartoon Network, leads the adult industry and has the latest technology in animation. Adult Swim, which originally aired on Sunday night in 2006 was in the air until 5:00 AM, and was broadcast every night except Friday. The series, which is produced exclusively for Adult Swim, as "The Brak Show," "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" and "Tom Goes to the Mayor", tend to be surreal and bizarre, but also considered fresh and original. Adult Swim reissued series "Futurama" and played an important role to avoid the cancellation of "Family Guy". In addition, it also issues numerous popular Anime series such as "FLCL", "Lupin III" and "Inuyasha."

While the series animated in large networks seemed mediocre, the cable television cartoon achieved several successes. Nickelodeon did see light cult hits like "Doug," "Rugrats," "Ren and Stimpy," "Rocko's Modern Life," "SpongeBob," "Invader Zim" and "The Fairly OddParents." Meanwhile, a new owner of Hanna-Barbera, Time Warner, the study focused on the creation of new drawings for the Cartoon Network. Hanna-Barbera was an influx of fresh blood and a new generation of drawings of Hanna-Barbera cartoon was born as "Dexter's Laboratory," "Johnny Bravo", "Cow and Chicken", "Powerpuff Girls" and " Courage the Cowardly Dog. "

Still, each new piece of animation was not a gold mine. The Disney animated films began to suffer in quality to late 1990, after the producer Jeff Katzenberg left the studio and team up with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen to form DreamWorks. Until the animation suffered another revival in the 2000s, a great deal (and many dollars spent) continued to spend on merchandising.

The growth of computer animation

Yet another wild card is added to this crowded and competitive atmosphere with the emergence of a new wave of "Computer Animation". The decade of the 90 experienced an exponential improvement in the use of computers to enhance animated sequences and special effects. This new form of entertainment soon dominated the world of special effects in Hollywood (the film "Terminator 2": "The Judgement" and "Jurassic Park" included impressive computer-animated sequences), and was only a matter of time to find a film produced entirely with computers.

Once again it was Disney who led this area. Disney animators had introduced computer-generated sequences gently in his movies, as in early 1991 in "Beauty and the Beast." A computer-generated magic carpet played a significant role in "Aladdin." In 1995, Disney produced with Pixar "Toy Story", the first completely computer generated film. The film was a huge success and created a new movement, other studies investigated produce their own computer-animated films (CGI).

Perhaps because it first developed as a new method of creating special effects, computer animation was not seen as a form of "children's entertainment." After decades as related but separate industries, the line between animation and special effects are eliminated by the popularization of computer special effects, to the extent that the use of computers in Hollywood movies has become a natural. The best special effects are often so subtle they go completely unnoticed. The computer animation has also made forays into television. The series of Saturday morning "ReBoot" gained much popularity among adults, this was the first of many CGI series like "Beast Wars," "War Planets" and "Roughnecks". The quality of computer animation has improved considerably with each new series. Many non-animated TV series (especially science fiction "Babylon 5") invested heavily in CGI production, producing special effects of a higher quality of its predecessors could dream at a relatively low cost.

Other studies with Disney tried their luck with computer-animated films and discovered their weaknesses to the monopoly that was putting animated Disney box office successes. The loss was most damaging to Disney in 2002 when the Oscar for Best Animated Film went to the artist (by hand) by Hayao Miyazaki, "Spirited Away" Disney inflicting a second defeat followed the Academy Awards.

Disney settled all their desks and Dreamworks Animation also announced it would abandon the traditional drawn animation and focus exclusively on computer-generated productions from 2003 onwards. Why Not American?

America the beautiful, Land of Opportunity, "If You Can't Make it Here, You Can't Make it Anywhere!" These are some of the thoughts we have as citizens of our "once" great country. What's happened to all the stuff that was once "Made in America?"

Despite all the hype and rhetoric, the US stills the world's leading manufacturer, but maybe for not too much longer. Based on 2009 numbers, we just squeaked past China, .7 trillion vs. 1.3 trillion. We lead in the manufacture of high tech products, including: aircraft, industrial machinery, medical and scientific equipment and media related products (publishing and printing). Take Apple for example. They have established a unique reputation in the consumer electronics industry. This includes a customer base that is devoted to the company and its brand, particularly here in the US of A. Fortune magazine named Apple the most admired company in the United States in 2008 and in the world in 2008, 2009, and 2010. As of September 2010 Apple had 46,600 full time employees and 2,800 temporary full time employees worldwide with sales of .23 billion. They operate factories in China that produce the IPod.

Another example would be, Nike which has contracted with more than 700 shops around the world and has offices located in 45 countries outside the United States. Most of the factories are located in Asia, including Indonesia, China, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Philippines, and Malaysia. What if I trip on my sneaker shoelaces, who and where I can I sue?

Other US companies like American Express, Aetna, Amazon, AT&T, Bank of America and Citigroup - with a combined total of 839,000 American employees are either sending American jobs overseas, or choosing to employ cheap overseas labor, instead of American workers. The question I ask is, WHY?

Unfortunately, the US has an aging workforce. We are home to 139 of the world's 500 largest multinational companies, nearly twice as much as the runner up, Japan. The average salary at an American multinational was almost ,000, in 2006. That's more than ,000 above the average wage in the private sector. Here come the buts, today we go overseas because that's where the customers are and the employees are more Gen X or Y then baby boomers.

The Dukes of Hazzard was about racing on the backs roads of Hazzard County, Georgia. In the early 1980's the TV series was thrilling Saturday evening viewing. You just could not miss one single episode as the Duke Boys (Bo and Luke) tried to get away from, out fox and out jump the tricky and materialistic Boss Hog along with his child like henchman Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane as they run around Hazzard County in their souped-up orange Dodge Charger named, The General Lee.

The popular TV series ran from 1979 to 1985. The cast included John Schneider (Bo Duke), Tom Wopat (Luke Duke); Sorrell Brooke played Boss Hogg and James Best portrayed the not so bright Sheriff. American Eskimo Dogs, also called Eskies, are a breed of companion dog originating from Europe. True to their appearance they are used to colder climates, but function well even in others. They require a daily dose of exercise to stay healthy and are often very playful. The toy size is indeed a size like any other artificial stuffed animal, and the dogs even resemble the fluffy artificially created stuffed animals you see often in shops. Their fur is always thick and profuse, and usually looks very nice. The dog has great characteristics as well and is loving, loyal and good with children at a relatively understanding age. American Eskimo Dogs live in average between 12 and 14 years, though make it past 20 years or more. This breed is a fairly healthy breed, although close attention should be paid to its eyes and tear ducts. They are prone to hip dysplasia, Elbow and Knee degeneration, patellar luxation, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, epilepsy, urinary stones and allergies and especially flea allergies that can lead to acute moist dermatitis. These terms may seem foreign to those who don't know what diseases they specify, but most of them are common disorders that appear as the dog grows older. One thing you might want to pay particular attention to is that this breed has a tendency to develop severe allergies to fleas. One single flea on them can result in frantic scratching and gnawing on its skin, which gives painful "hot spots" and skin lesions.

Many people find the puppies of American Eskimo Dogs to be very "cute" and purchase this breed as a puppy without doing sufficient research, such as discovering the longevity and needs of this breed. This breed can take longer to mature than other breeds, and Eskies can behave more like puppies than like adults for up to two years, when they finally start to mature and grow their adult coats. One of the traits of these flourishing African-American women is that they tend to give back to their communities: they head charities, come to be mentors, start foundations, and generally do as much as they perhaps can to empower other Black women in the chase of success.

Because of her superior performance, Berry competed in Miss World 1986 in England. She was named delegate to the States to replace Brenda Denton, Miss New Mexico and Miss Usa World, who had located third in Britain in late 1985. Berry's performance at the 35Th Miss United States comes as tiny surprise to the population who have followed the American contest; a succeed that had seemed roughly impossible a few decades earlier. In the 70s and early 80s, three beauty pageant organizations had had black queens, but the Miss Usa society did not make it until 1990, when the statuesque Carole Gist, who stands 1.82m tall, won the national trophy.

Two years ago, on July 26, 1977 Janelle Commissiong, Miss Trinidad Tobago -- according to the New York Times "the black bombshell" - had come to be the first black winner in the 26-year history of Miss Universe. Then, in 1984, Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America in Atlantic City, but her reign ended prematurely and was replaced by Suzette Charles, other black beauty.

The final ceremony on 13 November, 1986, was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London before a crowd 8,000 spectators. About 77 countries and dependencies took part in this contest, including Gambia, Tonga and Isle of Man. In November 1986 Berry broke precedents by taking part in the global contest, where she terminated among the top sixth. It was the first time in Miss World's history that America sent a black entrant to London, home to the Miss World Organization.

There were some enchanting anecdotes: Miss Bolivia, Claudia Arevalo Ayala, was a member of one of the most foremost Bolivian Volleyball clubs; Miss Ecuador was an English-teacher and a fashion model in her homeland; and Gibraltar, a tiny British dependency in Europe, became the smallest territory on the planet to send a representative to London. On the other hand, Poland sent a delegate to the global contest -- in a land where the beauty contests had been traditionally forbidden by the Communist regimes. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, a nation in crisis for years, also participated.There were 17 black entries from Africa, Europe and the Americas. It was the first time that France had sent a black delegate to the Miss World Pageant.

However the British pageant should not be left without making Mention of Halle Berry. She was also the first black woman from an advanced nation to make the semi-finals in the Miss World Pageant. Ohio's Berry became the 36th American delegate to compete in Miss World, a contest where the Usa did not have a great performance.
